The short version
- Anything that plays on a screen can be recorded. Platforms can block downloads, not recording.
- Screen recording software copies the pixels, so an invisible per-fan mark comes with it. In our bench, software screen recording was traced.
- A phone filming the screen is much harder. For video it was inconclusive in our bench.
- A visible per-fan badge helps with filmed copies, unless it is cropped out.
Can fans screen record OnlyFans?
Yes, in practice. Platforms can make saving harder. Fansly, for example, says users can’t download or save media outside its site. But a screen recorder captures whatever is on the screen, and a second phone can film any screen at all. Assume that anything you sell can be recorded.
Two very different kinds of recording
Software screen recording
Built-in recorders on phones and computers, and desktop capture apps, copy the picture as it is drawn. The result is re-encoded, usually at a different size and quality, but it is still your pixels. An invisible mark spread through those pixels survives that kind of copy well.
Filming the screen with another device
Pointing a phone at a screen is a physical re-capture: the picture is tilted, out of focus in places, affected by glare, and full of moiré patterns. Much of the fine detail an invisible mark lives in is lost.
What our tests showed
- Video, software screen recording: traced, for both one-copy-per-fan and mass-message marking.
- Video, phone filming a tilted screen with moiré: inconclusive for both. Nobody was named, which is the safe result.
- Photos, simulated photo of a screen: 4 of 4 traced, after lining each one up against the original.
The screen capture and filming in that bench were simulated in software. An earlier lab run with live phone capture had a lower pass rate. The robustness report has every result, and what we haven’t tested yet.
What helps with filmed copies
- A visible per-fan badge. A phone films it along with everything else. Leakers often crop it, but not always. Trace can add a small visible corner badge on top of the invisible mark.
- Per-list versions for mass messages. Even a weak reading may be enough to narrow a leak down to a list. See tracing a mass message leak.
- Patterns over time. If the same account’s copies keep turning up as clean recordings, that is worth acting on.
What to do when you find a screen recording
- Save the best quality copy you can find. Re-uploads of re-uploads lose more of the mark.
- Upload it to Trace. If the match clears, you get the account it was delivered to; if not, it says inconclusive.
- Get the copies taken down either way. DMCA vs attribution explains why you need both.
Mark it before it gets recorded
Trace puts an invisible mark in each fan’s copy, with an optional visible badge. Free for 3 fans and 2 marked drops a month, with 1 traced leak. Pro is $39/mo with a 14-day free trial.
